Gustave Roussy Cancer Campus Grand Paris, Villejuif/France
The imaging department in Gustave Roussy Cancer Campus Hospital (Paris Saclay University) (Villejuif, France) in France (south suburb of Paris) (head: Dr. Corinne Balleyguier) includes two main departments: nuclear medicine department and radiology department. Gustave Roussy hospital has been stated in 2020 as the 5th world’s best cancer center in the world, in terms of clinical and research activities. Imaging in radiology and nuclear medicine is focused on cancer patients, from screening to post treatment imaging. All types of cancer are treated in Gustave Roussy. The radiology department includes 2 CT scanners, one equipped with dual tube technology, 2 MRI (1.5 and 3 T), 1 breast imaging unit equipped with 3 digital mammography units with contrast-mammography, tomosynthesis, breast ultrasound with shear-wave elastography, and XRay and ultrasound units with experiences in contrast ultrasonography. A brand new nuclear medicine department opening in June 2021 will be equipped with 2 new digital PET-CTs and 1 new SPECT-CT. The nuclear medicine department has a high experience in neuro-endocrine tumors, thyroid tumors particularly. Strong collaboration between the clinical departments (especially breast oncology department, surgery, pathology, pediatrics …) allows optimal patient management and fruitful research. Radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians are involved in patient management with multidisciplinary sessions (more than 18 /week). Research in imaging oncology in radiology and nuclear medicine, artificial intelligence, biomarkers is encouraged in the department, part of the research lab BIOMAPS (Paris Saclay University).

Number of available places
During 2021/2022 one place will be available for a recently board-certified European radiologist, who is a full member of ESR. Applicants can apply for a research/clinical fellowship.
Eligibility
- This exchange programme applies to radiologists within the first three years after board-certification.
- The candidate should wish to become a fellow or subspecialise in hybrid imaging.
- He/She should have excellent knowledge of hybrid imaging as well as basic skills in image interpretation.
- He/She should also have an interest and basic skills in medical database handling and scientific presentations and publications.
- Advanced knowledge of the English language as well as B2 level knowledge of the French language is mandatory.
- The successful candidate will have to make himself/herself available for an interview via Skype/Zoom.
- ESR membership fee for 2021 must be settled by the candidate.
Please note that you can ONLY apply for one ESOR fellowship programme and one of the available topics at once.
Duration and funding
The fellowship will start on October 1, 2021 and will last for 12 months. The fellow has to ensure his/her availability for the exact period stated as any postponement is not possible. The fellow will receive a grant (€23.000) from the training centre which will be paid on a monthly basis.
Programme structure
Based on weekly training programme modules, the trainee will familiarize him/herself with the institution’s imaging equipment, in the two units of the imaging department, radiology and nuclear medicine department. He/She will then learn to become proficient at imaging examinations used in oncology, to review and to interpret images and to use image analysis programmes. He/she will be focused on hybrid imaging in oncology, especially with PET-CT imaging, CT and MR imaging. Treatment evaluation criteria in radiology and nuclear medicine will be specifically learned. Clinical activities will be shared between the 2 departments, which are located at the same level in the hospital.
The main tools will be case-by-case hands-on teaching on routine clinical cases with different modalities from experienced staff, training by a mentor in the interpretation of imaging studies from an established teaching file or previous cases and multidisciplinary meetings in oncology (breast, head and neck, GI, GU, pediatrics, hematology, endocrine tumors etc…).
The research activities may be focused on artificial intelligence in imaging, innovations in breast imaging, research in nuclear medicine with new tracers, advanced ultrasound with contrast imaging, dual-energy CT, and DWI in oncology particularly. The fellow should be able to select patients, organize and monitor the examinations, collect and analyze the data, under supervision, including demographics and other clinical data and write a scientific article. Collaborations with other physicians and engineers or physicists in the institution will be needed.
A detailed individual program will be determined at the beginning of the fellowship in consultation with the fellow.
Certification
After successful completion of the one-year training and the submission of a final written report about the clinical/research activities performed during the 12 months, the fellow receives a certificate from ESR/ESOR and the Gustave Roussy Cancer Campus Grand Paris.
