The second ESHI-ESR course on hybrid imaging in oncology, organised by the European School of Radiology (ESOR), exceeded all expectations.
The day-and-a-half long course took place in Vienna from August 31 to September 1 and provided final-year residents, general radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians and oncologists an opportunity to engage with a world-class faculty and update their knowledge on new applications and state-of-the-art hybrid medical imaging of cancer. Due to higher than expected demand the course had to be moved to the Messe Vienna in order to accommodate the 157 attendees from 34 countries.
In line with its commitment to education and its particular focus on promoting hybrid imaging, ESHI in collaboration with ESR decided to lift the original attendance cap of 100 places for the fully subsidised course, enabling more participants to learn about this important field of radiology. In addition, 12 participants from low and middle income countries were able to take advantage of a joint sponsorship package from the ESR and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This was part of the organisations’ cooperation on education in diagnostic imaging, governed by a practical arrangement concluded earlier this year.
“The second course on hybrid imaging co-hosted by ESOR and ESHI was an even bigger success than last year’s meeting and brought a great number of professionals from various countries to Vienna, demonstrating the high demand for hybrid medical imaging education and training possibilities. The ESR and ESHI have made great efforts to meet this demand, and are determined to expand their offerings in the future. On a personal note, I was very happy to see so many radiology residents attending the course in Vienna and I was delighted about our close collaboration with the IAEA”, concludes Prof. Dr. Katrine Riklund from Umeå, Sweden, current ESHI President and ESR Past-President.
On November 14, an ESOR course for EDiR on hybrid imaging will take place in the ESR Learning Centre in Vienna. This foundation course aims to prepare prospective candidates for the European Diploma in Radiology (EDiR). Board-certified radiologists wanting to update their knowledge are also welcome.
ESHI is offering four more educational webinars on hybrid imaging this year, which are free of charge for members, and past webinars are also available on demand, in which prominent experts in the field of hybrid imaging share their knowledge about various modalities and subspecialties related to the fusion of nuclear medicine and radiology as well as molecular imaging. The next webinar on September 18 focuses on combined PET/MRI methods and applications.
Furthermore, another ESHI educational course on hybrid imaging in oncology will take place in Vienna on December 14-15. The two-day course offers lectures, interactive workshops and a guided tour through the Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Department at the Medical University of Vienna, focusing on the daily work with PET/CT, SPECT/CT and PET/MR scanners.
